The stats after a match said possession was almost even, yet one team looked in charge for most of the second half. They never had huge spells on the ball but the other side seemed unable to get out. What do you watch to spot that sort of control when the percentages don't tell the story?

Possession is only one part of control. I pay attention to where each team wins the ball, how easily it enters the attacking third, and whether the opponent can make a clean first pass after regaining possession. In one match I saw, neither side had a big advantage in total passes, but one kept forcing hurried clearances and collecting them immediately. That's a clear sign of territorial control. Chances, field position and the number of calm exits from defence can tell a very different story from the possession percentage alone. The other sporting link mentioned in this thread is cricket matches live here, although that's a different sport from the tactical example here.
